Some years ago, I bought myself a property in Arizona, away from any city distractions. I needed calm and inspiration to carry out my new project: I started writing my first novel.
Everything was perfect, except for the fact I had occasional power cuts and I like warm water! I needed power for pool heating and water heating in general. How do solar water heating systems Work?
Solar hot water systems such as IPSWH, sometimes referred to as “batch heaters” work based on a tank, or various tanks, painted black in order to absorb heat from the sun and then transfer it to the water within.
The regular IPSWH brings cold water into a solar collection tank through an inlet near the bottom, heats it, and then moves it to a backup heater. This system eliminates the need for expensive pumps and/or controls, since it uses waterline pressure for circulation purposes. BASIC PRINCIPLES:
There are 6 basic principles around the design, installation, use and maintenance of these hot water systems or IPSWH's, you must definitely follow:
- Find the maximum sunlight exposure to Locate your heater: Your IPSWH must be south-facing and exposed to the sun all year long, preferably near a conventional gas, electric or wood backup unit to minimize piping distance
- The collector must be effective. Long, thin cylinders are the most efficient, and the cheapest and easiest of these are used electric water heater cores.
If you prefer new tanks, be sure to test them thoroughly for leaks and rust, and patch carefully where necessary. Never use a tank that you have doubts about. In the guide, there are certain tricks you may use too: like using a new anode (that costs a few bucks) to make your system last longer, or plopping Solar hot water systems right on the ground (instead of the walls or roofs), and using reflectors to increase solar exposure.
- Make sure that your water tank(s) will retain heat. You will learn exactly how to provide maximum heat retention by using specific materials.
- Size your heater for its intended application. The size of your IPSWH can be easily calculated. It is usually by allowing 30 gallons of water capacity per person in your household. Also, measurements and requirements may vary in specific cases, but find out you experts advice, for economical thermal solar water heating and all related benefits in any case.
- Connect to the backup system in an efficient manner. When installing solar thermal heating, locate it close to its conventional mate. You will be told exactly how to seal and insulate pipes, and about precautions to avoid accelerated corrosion.

As you might tell by now, a solar hot water heating system can be built with some simple basic components such as Water Pumps, Heat Exchangers, and Expansion Tanks, among others, and as you thoroughly follow the guide, you will certainly understand how they function.
